Problematic turbo engines are units with thin piston rings, long and loaded timing chains, a complex phase change system and direct injection. Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international franchise car service network Fit Service, told about this on June 2. He highlighted examples of such engines from BMW, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia.

According to the expert, in the last few years, regular requests have been recorded for the joint PSA/BMW 1.6 THP (EP6) turbo engine line. Owners periodically complain about the stretching of the timing chain at relatively low mileage, characteristic chain noises, oil burn and carbon deposits on the intake valves. There have been cases when major repairs for such a motor were required much earlier than the stated 300 thousand km, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.

Owners of cars with Volkswagen turbo engines (TSI family) often complain about stretched timing chains, metallic ringing at startup and increased oil consumption at low mileage, as well as carbon deposits in the intake. Appeals on Hyundai/Kia turbo engines (G4KH family and similar in design) are also recorded — the specialist noted cases of cranking of connecting rods or root liners in the range of about 100-150 thousand km, as well as scuffing in the cylinders.

The specialist advised car owners with turbo engines to follow a strict oil change regime, handle a cold engine carefully and give it time to cool down after intensive driving. The turbine and the catalyst operate at very high temperatures and do not forgive cheap oil, he noted.

Earlier that day, experts said that using tires with a low profile (50% or lower) and, as a result, a larger diameter disc entails a number of disadvantages. According to experts, when using low-profile tires, there is a high risk of damage to the tire and disc when hitting a road obstacle. Driving comfort also deteriorates, as the tire is unable to absorb road bumps due to the height of the profile.
