Senior advisers to US President Donald Trump believe that as part of a possible Pentagon military campaign in the Middle East, the best option would be for Israel to launch a first strike against Iran before the US launches its series of strikes on February 26, Politico newspaper reported, citing sources.

Thus, the advisers believe, an Israeli strike will trigger a retaliatory strike from Iran, which will allow Washington to justify its own strikes in front of American voters.

The article notes that during his visit to the United States, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted on taking the necessary measures to disrupt Iran's nuclear program.

The third round of indirect Iranian-American negotiations on the nuclear dossier started on February 26 with the mediation of Oman in Geneva. The Iranian delegation was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Abbas Araqchi, and the American delegation was headed by the special envoy of the head of the White House Stephen Witkoff.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 19 that Russia sees an "unprecedented escalation" around Iran and hopes for a diplomatic solution to the conflict with the United States.
