- Kallas confirmed the EU's intention to adopt the 20th package of sanctions against Russia
The leaders of the European Union (EU) member states plan to introduce a new, 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions on February 24 this year. This was announced on January 29 by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas.
"According to the 20th package of sanctions, yes, we aim to get this done by February 24," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying after a meeting of the heads of the EU foreign ministries.
The German newspaper Die Welt reported on December 31, 2025, that a future package of sanctions against the Russian Federation could be timed to coincide with the anniversary of the start of a special military operation. It was noted that other individuals and legal entities who would be banned from traveling to Europe and whose assets would be frozen there would be subject to sanctions. It was emphasized that the 20th package would also include new sanctions related to the energy and banking sectors.
On October 23 of the same year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on the 19th package of Russian sanctions against Russia adopted on the same day, pointed out their ineffectiveness. He stated that the restrictions would not have a strong impact on the domestic economy. On September 17, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, also drew attention to the fact that such a policy harms the EU itself.
