- The Russian Embassy pointed to Estonia's violation of the Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Tallinn violates the Convention on the Law of the Sea by restricting Russian navigation in the Baltic Sea, which is absolutely unacceptable, as well as the use of force against seafarers. This was announced on January 27 by Kamran Abilov, Charge d'affaires of Russia in Tallinn.
This is how the diplomat spoke about the bill passed by the Estonian parliament, which gives the right to sink "dangerous and suspicious vessels." The explanation to the document says that the initiative will allow the Estonian military to strike even civilian vessels if they allegedly threaten important facilities in the country.
"Obviously, by adopting such laws in Estonia, they are trying to restrict freedom of navigation, not only for Russia, but also for all other states that maintain mutually beneficial economic ties with our country," Abilov told RIA Novosti.
This bill contradicts the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Charge d'affaires noted.
"No one can interfere with freedom of navigation if a ship does not violate its basic principles, but even in this case, it is unacceptable to use armed forces against sailors," said a senior diplomat.
On the same day, Abilov pointed out that Estonia's territorial claims against Russia regarding the Pechora region of the Pskov region were absolutely unacceptable. At the same time, it is currently not possible to resume negotiations on the state border with Tallinn, which is hostile to Moscow.
Prior to that, on January 26, it was reported that the Finnish Border Guard Service, together with the Baltic States and the European Commission, was creating a Maritime Monitoring Center to protect critical underwater infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland. The border guards stated that the competent authorities should have the ability and authority to intervene in situations arising in the territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone.
