The likelihood of a cold war between Europe and the United States over the claims of American President Donald Trump to Greenland is currently low, as the parties are too closely linked economically. This was stated by political analyst Dmitry Levy on Monday, January 19.

"The deterioration of relations is certainly taking place. Europe did not expect Trump's maneuver and will now stall for time as much as possible, hoping that his presidency will end sooner and his successor will switch to other tasks. In the meantime, Europe is forced to increase its negotiating baggage in order to be able to object to Trump," he said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

The political scientist pointed out the confusion of European leaders in the current situation. According to the expert, this indicates that the politicians of the European Union (EU) no longer have the political weight that they had 50 years ago — they cannot hold a blow, they are only capable of verbal objections and are already discussing how to sell Greenland while saving face.

"But you can't talk about the Cold War, of course, because economically Europe and the United States are too closely connected, you can't just take it and erase it. I even doubt that Trump will seriously apply tariffs against EU countries, because this will deal a significant blow to the States themselves," the political scientist believes.

Levy noted that most likely, now there are speculations on both sides, a game of "who will lose their nerve first." He admitted that they would "surrender" to the Europeans.

Earlier in the day, the media reported on the deployment of Danish troops to Greenland, writes Life.Ru . It is specified that the chief of the Army Staff Peter Boysen is also arriving in the group. In addition, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a Facebook post (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) that Greenland would not allow pressure to be exerted on itself.

In turn, Oleg Barabanov, a Russian historian and political scientist, program director of the Valdai International Discussion Club, Doctor of Political Sciences, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of European Union Politics at MGIMO, said in an interview with Pravda.Ru that the sale of Greenland is capable of intensifying disagreements between the United States and Europe, but not so much as to change the EU's course on Ukraine.

On January 14, Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security, RT reports. Nielsen noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

Later, on January 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland.
