The Netherlands threatened to "grab the Americans by the scruff of the neck and steer them back in the same direction" if something went wrong. This was announced on January 19 by the country's Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, commenting on the aggravation of the situation around Greenland and pressure from the United States.

"The reality is that we are dealing with the United States, which looks at the world order and alliances differently, and at what goals they pursue and what we pursue. If something goes wrong, we will try to grab these Americans by the scruff of the neck and put them back on track," the minister said.

According to him, Europe has already tried to convey its position to US President Donald Trump. Brekelmans noted that Europe and NATO need to work together again, which requires establishing communication with the American leader.

In addition, the minister also said that Denmark and Greenland have made it clear that they do not intend to make concessions.

On January 14, Trump said that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States towards the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

The Bild newspaper reported on January 15 that the first military personnel from European countries arrived in Greenland amid Trump's statements about the need for the island to join the United States. According to the newspaper, the Hercules military transport aircraft of the Danish army landed at the airport of the capital of Greenland Nuuk, later units from Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Great Britain and Norway also went to Greenland.

Later, on January 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland.
