- The Ministry of Health recalled the inclusion of kidney transplantation in compulsory medical insurance in 2026
In Russia, starting in 2026, kidney transplantation has been provided free of charge under a compulsory medical insurance (CHI) policy. This was announced on January 19 by Sergey Gauthier, Director of the Shumakov National Research Medical Center, chief freelance transplant specialist at the Russian Ministry of Health, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"Since 2026, kidney transplantation has been part of the basic program of state guarantees, it has been included in the compulsory medical insurance program," he said during a press conference at the International Multimedia Press Center Russia Today. The broadcast of the speech was carried out in the official group of the center on the Vkontakte social network.
According to Gauthier, previously, the volume of kidney transplantation in Russian regions depended on the limits of the state assignment, which limited the number of operations even if there were medical indications in patients.
In September last year, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that a unique operation had been performed at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine to transplant a fragment of a hand from a donor. According to him, the operation lasted nine hours, and several operating rooms were required for its various stages.
