Amsterdam is ready to "show its teeth" to US President Donald Trump in the event of an attack on Greenland. This was stated on January 19 by Dutch Foreign Minister David van Wil and stressed that the claims of the American leader to the Danish island are unacceptable.

He also noted that the application of trade duties against the European Union (EU) countries that supported Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland is an inappropriate and unnecessary step.

In turn, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer questioned the possibility of the US army seizing Greenland by force.

"No, I don't really think so. I think this can and should be resolved through a calm discussion, taking into account the principles of who determines the future of Greenland, and understanding that it is completely wrong to use duties in this case," he added.

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure, against the background of the situation around the new US duties due to Greenland, stressed that Europe intends to "politely but firmly" convince the United States that it is not weak.

"Our goal in the coming days, weeks, quarters and years is to politely but firmly convince (the US Treasury Secretary. — Ed.) by Scott Bessent that he is wrong. Europe is not weak, Europe is strong. Europe can be even stronger," he said.

Earlier in the day, the media reported on the deployment of Danish troops to Greenland. It is specified that the chief of the Army Staff Peter Boysen is also arriving in the group. In addition, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a Facebook post (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) that Greenland would not allow pressure to be exerted on itself.

On January 14, US President Donald Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security. Nielsen noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

Later, on January 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland.
