The auto expert explained the reasons for the appearance of cracks on the windows in winter

During the winter season, motorists often make mistakes that cause the windshields on their cars to crack. One of the reasons is to turn on the maximum heating on the cold glass, which dramatically increases its temperature from the inside, while the outside remains cold. This was stated by Yulia Trushkova, Director of Service at Rolf, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported on January 19.

She explained that the tempered windshield, although durable, is sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Thermal stress is created in the area of chips and microcracks, as a result, the glass may crack in the direction from the defect to the edge.

"Do not direct the blow directly at the glass. First, warm up the interior to +10...+15 degrees, then turn on the blowing on the glass. If there is a heated windshield, use it, it warms up evenly," Trushkova advised.

Another reason for glass damage is chipping, which causes moisture to freeze and expand at night. Also, motorists sometimes try to melt the ice on the glass with boiling water or clean the ice with a metal scraper, credit cards and keys, which leads to scratches, stresses and local points of weakening of the glass.

Earlier, on January 16, auto expert Alexander Kornev said that a car left in a snowdrift risks hidden damage and accelerated wear of components due to exposure to reagents, temperature fluctuations and prolonged parking. Prolonged parking also has a negative effect on the battery: batteries lose their charge, and worn ones can completely discharge. Corrosion often affects the terminals, which leads to problems with contact and undercharging.
