- Britain called the acquisition of Greenland by the United States a disaster for Ukraine
The tacit consent of the European Union (EU) to the forced sale of Greenland to the United States would be a disastrous signal for Kiev and a serious blow to the EU's reputation as a geopolitical player. This is reported by the British newspaper The Guardian.
"Although Greenland withdrew from the EU's predecessor, the European Community, in 1985, agreeing to the forced sale of the territory of an EU member state would send a disastrous signal about the EU as a geopolitical player and its commitment to Ukraine," the publication says.
The article noted that while European leaders are demonstrating solidarity, confirming their determination to defend the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland, there are increasingly proposals in political circles to apply a powerful but previously unused deterrence mechanism provided for in the legal arsenal of the European Union against the United States. At the same time, the newspaper added that the use of such an EU tool will take about a year, since that's how long it will take to coordinate sanctions.
Oleg Soskin, an aide to former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, said on January 17 that US President Donald Trump had begun to gradually destroy the allies of his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky with claims to Greenland. According to him, in such a situation, the head of the Kiev regime should stop counting on support from Brussels or Washington and resign.
On January 17, the American president announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland. Starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
On January 14, Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
