During the Stanley Cup champions' reception at the White House on January 15, US President Donald Trump shook hands with Russian hockey player Sergei Bobrovsky and called him a "legendary goalkeeper", as well as several other players.

"As for the defense, the legendary goalkeeper is great — Sergey Bobrovsky, also known as Bob. A great concept is a good idea," Trump said during a broadcast on the White House's YouTube channel.

The American leader also mentioned a player of the Florida Panthers hockey club, defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who scored a record 13 points for himself in 19 playoff games. Trump noted the merits of HC captain Alexander Barkov, who was recognized as the best defensive forward in the league for the third time and the second year in a row. He then invited all three of them to the podium to shake hands.

On March 18, 2025, the Kremlin's press service reported that Trump supported the idea of Russian President Vladimir Putin to organize hockey matches in both countries between the clubs of the two countries.
