- Zakharova promised a response to attempts not to take into account the interests of the Russian Federation in the Arctic
Attempts to ignore Russian interests in the Arctic region will not go unanswered and will have serious consequences. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, warned about this on January 15.
"It is important to understand that any attempts to ignore Russia's interests in the Arctic, especially in the field of security, will not go unanswered and will have far—reaching consequences," the diplomat said at a briefing.
In addition, Moscow considers NATO's plans to launch the Arctic Sentry mission, which aims to impose Western orders, to be a provocation. Publications on this topic have appeared in foreign media in recent days.
"There are materials [in the Western media] about discussions among NATO countries about plans to launch a new alliance mission codenamed an Arctic Sentry. The conversation on this subject should be considered as another provocation by Western countries that are trying to impose their own rules, to do this already in this part of the world," Zakharova said.
Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin told Izvestia on January 12 that the North Atlantic Alliance is set for military confrontation and rivalry with Russia in the Arctic instead of dialogue. According to Barbin, interest in the Arctic is caused by its increasing strategic importance. However, instead of advancing the goals of developing mutually beneficial international cooperation in high latitudes, Western countries' attention is focused on military aspects.
