The use of the Oreshnik missile system by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation demonstrated its unique technical characteristics — missiles launched by it cannot be intercepted using existing air defense systems. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT).
"Ballistic missiles are launched into the atmosphere using rocket engines, and then descend at high speed due to gravity. This can make them very difficult for air defense systems to intercept and almost impossible when launching submunitions," the article says on January 9.
It also quotes Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying that the "Hazel Tree" is an illustration of the power of Russian technologies that are being created in defiance of Western sanctions.
On the same day, Sky News TV channel found out that most of Europe is within the range of the Oreshnik missile, which has a range of up to 5.5 thousand km. Putin said on December 2 that Russia was not going to fight Europe.
Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), commenting on the strike on the facilities of the military-industrial complex (MIC) of Ukraine with the use of Oreshnik, said that not a single air defense system is capable of resisting the projectile of a unique Russian complex.
Military expert Yuri Knutov, speaking to Izvestia on the same day, said that the use of the Hazel was not only a "retaliatory strike" for the attack on Putin's residence by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), but also a signal to Kiev. According to him, the point is that such weapons, if necessary, can be used against both administrative and political centers, where decisions are made on the use of military equipment, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), against Russia.
