Merz took the penultimate place in the ranking of popular German politicians
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took the penultimate place in the ranking of the 20 most popular German politicians. This is evidenced by the survey data of the INSA institute, which was published by the Bild newspaper on January 6.
On a scale from zero to 10, the Chancellor was given an average score of 3.5 points. The last time Merz dropped to 19th out of 20 places in a similar ranking was in October last year. However, in December he improved his position, moving to 17th place.
Only the head of the CDU/CSU (Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union) parliamentary faction, Jens Spahn, turned out to be slightly less popular than Merz. He took the last, 20th place, with a score of three points.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius remains at the top of the list with 5.2 points. Hendrik Wust, Prime Minister of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Markus Zeder, Prime Minister of Bavaria, took second and third places (4.4 points each).
Der Spiegel magazine reported on December 23, 2025, that about 60% of Germans were critical of the work of the German government and Merz personally. It was noted that only 27% of the surveyed citizens expect improvements in Germany, and only 35% of respondents want to see Merz as chancellor in the future. Chancellor Merz's rating dropped amid the politician's foreign policy failures, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper noted on December 22.
