The urologist named the most common myths about men's health
Russians still face well-established myths about men's health, which make it difficult to detect diseases in a timely manner and delay contacting a doctor. On December 15, Professor Sergey Kotov, urologist, Deputy chief physician of the K+31 network of multidisciplinary medical clinics in urology, MD, told Izvestia about the most common misconceptions.
According to him, one of the most harmful myths is men's belief that in the absence of discomfort and pain there is no need to visit a doctor. The specialist emphasized that many urological diseases, including prostate pathologies, erectile dysfunction, and even oncological processes, can be asymptomatic for a long time. He noted that only early diagnosis makes it possible to avoid severe consequences and preserve the quality of life.
"Another myth is that impotence is an exclusively age—related phenomenon. Erectile dysfunction can occur in men at any age. The main reasons for this may be chronic diseases, stress, poor lifestyle, etc. It is important to remember that this is not a verdict, and timely diagnosis and treatment can bring back a full—fledged intimate life," the doctor explained.
The urologist paid special attention to the erroneous belief in the effectiveness of self-medication. He noted that attempts to solve problems using folk remedies often lead to a deterioration of the condition, since such methods do not replace occupational therapy. According to the specialist, only a doctor can choose the correct treatment, taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient.
The expert stressed that myth—busting and regular preventive visits to the doctor are the best way to preserve men's health and prevent the development of dangerous diseases.
On December 1, Sergey Lunyushin, a psychologist and expert in the field of NLP, hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, spoke about the fight against depression in men. According to him, they often hide their condition: the stereotype that a man should be "strong" is still strong in society. Because of this, denial of the problem often turns into feelings of guilt and inferiority, which only deepens depression and makes it more difficult to diagnose. As a result, many people seek help at an advanced stage.
