There are less than 100 days left before the expiration of the Strategic Offensive Arms Agreement (START) between Russia and the United States. This was stated on December 10 by Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu during a press conference following his visit to Vietnam.

"We have less than 100 days left before the expiration of the START strategic offensive arms agreement. Our proposals, the proposals made by our president, are on the table. Of course, we are waiting for a response," he said.

Shoigu expressed the hope that the proposals that exist will help stop the "destructive movement."

In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia's readiness to adhere to the restrictions under the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START Treaty) after February 5, 2026, for another year. He added that the measure would become viable provided that the United States did not take steps that would undermine the balance of deterrence capabilities.

In turn, the American leader Donald Trump called Russia's proposal on the START Treaty a good idea.

Later, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted that Russia had not received an official response from the United States to the START Treaty initiative. According to him, if the United States is not interested in the proposal of the Russian Federation, the state will dispense with the reaction of the American side. Ryabkov added that there is currently no talk of extending the START Treaty.
