In 2024, the Japanese treasury was replenished by a record 129 billion yen ($833 million) due to the unclaimed inheritance of deceased citizens. This was reported on December 8 by The Japan Times newspaper, citing data from the Supreme Court.

"About $833 million of unclaimed assets were returned to the treasury of Japan. This is almost four times higher than the 33.6 billion yen recorded in 2013, when accounting began," the article says.

The sharp increase in unclaimed inheritance is one of the signs of demographic problems. Japan is suffering from an ongoing population decline, which has been recorded since 2009. The number of elderly people who are not married and have no heirs is growing.

"The annual increase in deaths may be one of the factors," said Koji Nambu, partner at Miyake & Partners law firm.

Fortune magazine reported on November 4 that Tokyo authorities have launched a large—scale social experiment - the transition to a four-day working week. The new measure is aimed at combating the record drop in the birth rate and the rapid aging of the population. A new "partial parental leave" policy is also being introduced, which will allow some employees to work two hours less per day.
