Ryabkov called the time of the grain deal gone
The time for the grain deal is over, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on November 26, commenting on the initiative of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to resume efforts on this issue.
"The grain deal, its time is probably over, after all. There is, of course, an understanding that effective, workable efforts are needed in the field of food security," RIA Novosti news agency quoted the diplomat as saying at a press conference.
Ryabkov stressed that the European Union (EU) countries, which boast of their "quasi-humanitarian approach" to many issues on the international agenda, in fact simply sabotaged the implementation of a series of agreements that could even out the situation on the food markets.
"Geopolitics is blurring our eyes here again," said the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Before a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 24, Erdogan announced that he intends to raise the issue of restoring agreements on the operation of the grain corridor. According to the Turkish leader, Ankara supports the grain corridor reaching both Europe and Africa.
The termination of the memorandum of the Russian Federation and the United Nations (UN) on the grain deal became known on May 29 of this year. Later, on July 17, the President of the Russian Federation clarified that the conditions of the so-called Black Sea Initiative aimed at exporting food had not been met by Europe. Putin clarified that instead of sending grain to the countries of the South, European states appropriated it for themselves.
The deputy official representative of the UN Secretary General, Farhan Haq, told Izvestia on November 12 that his organization was ready to assist in the resumption of the Black Sea deal.
