The somnologist spoke about the effect of healthy sleep on metabolic processes
High–quality healthy sleep of at least 7.5-8 hours a day has a positive effect on metabolic processes in the body. Ilya Smirnov, a general practitioner and somnologist at the Be Healthy clinic on Sretenka, told Gazeta about this on November 26.Ru».
"Quality sleep has a positive effect on health, primarily normalizes metabolic processes in the body, and affects appetite control. The two main hormones involved in regulating the satiety process and, consequently, appetite management are leptin and ghrelin, which are responsible for hunger and satiety," he said.
Sleep disorders lead to an increase in ghrelin in the blood, causing appetite and a desire to eat, especially foods high in calories.
On the contrary, healthy sleep stabilizes the endocrine system, reduces the level of cortisol (stress hormone), and regulates the hormonal background.
"For an eight—hour nap, a person burns up to 500 calories, which is practically a dream for those who want to lose weight without doing anything," the doctor noted.
On the same day, Sleep Health magazine reported that a recent study by scientists from University College London, the University of California, and the Republican University of Uruguay showed that regular daytime sleep prolongs life and keeps the brain healthy for a longer time.
Earlier, on November 18, Medical Xpress magazine reported on the prevalence of daytime sleepiness. According to the publication, 72% of adults in the United States experience drowsiness during the day. It was clarified that this prevents them from performing everyday tasks, and for many, fatigue also affects mood, stress or anxiety levels, and work productivity.
