Using dim light when reading, working on a computer, and other activities where it is important to focus on details can harm your eyesight. She told the Newspaper about this on November 25.Doctor of the ophthalmological center "Vision" Kristina Gorbacheva.
"The main problem is not the shade of the lamp, but the lack of brightness. In a darkened room, the pupil dilates, and more scattering rays pass through the periphery of the optical media. The picture on the retina loses clarity, the contrast decreases, the fine print becomes less distinguishable," Gorbacheva explained.
According to her, this can lead to frequent headaches and loss of concentration.
Such light is especially harmful to the elderly. According to the ophthalmologist, transparency in the lens decreases with age, which is why elderly people need several times more light.
The doctor told us which lighting in which rooms would be most appropriate.
"For reading and working with documents, 300-500 lux is enough on the table [a unit that indicates how brightly the surface is illuminated]. <...> In the living room, a common background of about 200-300 units of illumination is suitable, but for a book on the sofa, a separate wall or floor lamp is needed. <...> The light should be distributed evenly, without sharp shadows and glare," the specialist noted.
Gorbacheva does not recommend using LED lamps often, since their low-frequency light with a deep change in brightness is perceived by the human nervous system as an irritant, which can also lead to headaches. To do this, it is better to use lamps and screens with high-frequency flickering without distorting colors. And for reading and work, the doctor advised using separate lamps with diffused light.
