The Iranian president said there was an urgent need to move the capital from Tehran.
The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Peseshkian, pointed out the need to move the capital of the state from Tehran to another city due to the lack of water and overpopulation there. This was reported by the IRNA news agency on November 20.
"When we said that we needed to move the capital, which, of course, we didn't even have enough budget for. <...> But the reality is that we no longer have a choice, it's coercion," the article says.
Peseshkian added that there is currently a real struggle for water and its distribution in the metropolis, which is leading to a crisis in the state. He clarified that Iran, which wants to develop, cannot solve the water problem.
On July 22, 2024, a group of senators from Liberia proposed to move the capital from Monrovia to the city that was planned to be built for this purpose. This measure was necessary due to frequent floods, overcrowding and poor management of the city.
