Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has confirmed that his government collapsed due to disagreements within the coalition over the allocation of funds to support Ukraine. In an interview with Die Zeit on November 12, he said that the stumbling block was the financing of about €15 billion to help Kiev and Ukrainians in Germany.

"I dissolved the last government because there was no unity on the issue of about €15 billion to finance additional measures for Ukraine and Ukrainians in Germany," Scholz said.

According to him, the crisis could have been avoided if his proposal to temporarily exceed the spending limit set by the debt brake had been accepted. He also noted that he considered the reduction of expenses for citizens or investments unjustified, and the irony of the situation is that after the early elections, the old Bundestag nevertheless approved the relaxation of the budget rule.

Earlier, on August 13, a survey by the Civey Institute showed that almost 40% of Germans rated the work of the current government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz worse than the work of the cabinet of his predecessor Olaf Scholz. Almost half of the respondents also stated that the current government does not contribute to the development of the country in any of the spheres of life.
