- Nebenzia spoke about Trump's reaction to Putin's story about the persecution of the UOC
During talks in Anchorage, Alaska, US President Donald Trump heard from Russian leader Vladimir Putin previously unknown facts about the situation in Ukraine, including the persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). This was announced on November 12 by Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Vasily Nebenzia.
"President Putin told him (Trump. — Ed.) said that the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church was being persecuted and banned in Ukraine, and President Trump could not believe it. There are other things that he might not have suspected," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to Nebenzie, the special representative of the President of the United States, Stephen Witkoff, also received new information about the situation around the Ukrainian settlement during hours of conversations with the Russian leader.
The meeting between Putin and Trump took place on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. During a joint press conference, the Russian leader noted the desire of his colleague from the United States for a settlement. Trump, in turn, shared that the negotiations went very well and called the summit in Alaska wonderful.
On October 1, the United Nations stated that attempts to ideologically justify the dissolution of religious organizations in Ukraine risk criminalizing freedom of thought, religion, and beliefs. Five UN experts, including the organization's special Rapporteurs on freedom of religion or belief and on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the fight against terrorism, Nazila Ganea and Ben Sol, expressed their concerns about the persecution of the canonical UOC in Ukraine.
