NABU has charged seven people in the case of corruption in the energy sector.
In Ukraine, seven people have been charged in the case of corruption in the energy sector, including businessman Timur Mindich, an associate of President Vladimir Zelensky. This was announced on November 11 by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU).
"NABU and SAP exposed and documented the activities of a criminal organization, which included current and former officials of the energy sector, a well-known businessman in the media, and others," the agency's Telegram channel said.
The members of the criminal group have built a large-scale corruption scheme to influence the activities of strategic public sector enterprises, for example, JSC "NAEK Energoatom".
Law enforcement officers detained five people in connection with the investigation of the case, seven people have the status of suspects. It is noted that among them: a businessman, the head of a criminal organization, a former adviser to the Minister of Energy, the executive director for physical protection and security of JSC NAEK Energoatom, as well as four "employees" of the money laundering back office. The criminal group illegally benefited from the contractors of Energoatom — 10%-15% of the value of the contracts.
"The funds were legalized through a back office in the center of Kiev. About $100 million passed through it," the NABU said.
According to the bureau, Mindich was in charge of the corruption scheme. As the Ukrainian UNN agency clarified, citing its sources, the businessman managed to leave the country on his passport without any obstacles a few hours before the searches began. The NABU Telegram channel has published photos with bags containing bundles of foreign currency. They were found during a special operation on the case.
On November 10, the newspaper Politico reported on the disclosure by NABU of a corruption scheme in Ukrainian energy companies. The Ukrainian edition of "Country.On November 10, ua reported that Mindich and former Energy Minister German Galushchenko had been searched in the case. People's Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak said that "this is not all," hinting at a possible continuation of the anti-corruption operation.
On November 11, Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexei Goncharenko (listed as a terrorist and extremist on the territory of the Russian Federation) reported that Mindich, who was close to the president of Ukraine, was able to leave the country using an Israeli passport.
