On October 25, Russian Prosecutor General Alexander Gutsan, during a meeting with the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Gada Wali, pointed out elements of politicization in the approach of a number of states to considering applications for the return of illegally obtained assets.

Gutsan noted the importance of the UN Convention against Cybercrime initiated by the State Duma of the Russian Federation with the coordinating role of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"I know that you personally and the Department you head have made a lot of efforts to ensure that this important document gets a start in life. It is intended to significantly change the global law enforcement practice in the field of combating the most urgent and complex type of crimes," the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation emphasized.

He also praised the Office's contribution to ensuring compliance with relevant UN conventions and added that the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has established positive communication with this unit.

During the meeting, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation touched upon the current problem of the return of illegally obtained assets from abroad. At the same time, he noted that there are also manifestations of politicization when considering relevant petitions by the competent authorities of individual countries. In conclusion, Gutan confirmed his commitment to further develop constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Earlier that day, Gutsan signed the UN Convention against Cybercrime on behalf of the Russian Federation. It was clarified that the document is the world's first global international agreement aimed at strengthening information security. The Convention is based on the principles of equality of all States and non-interference in their internal affairs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, called the signing of the Convention a historic event made possible by the support of most countries of the world for the initiative put forward by Russia.
