Attempts to ideologically justify the dissolution of religious organizations in Ukraine risk criminalizing freedom of thought, religion, and beliefs. This was announced on October 1 by the UN press service.

Five UN experts, including the organization's Special Rapporteurs on freedom of religion or belief and on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the fight against terrorism, Nazila Ganea and Ben Sol, expressed their concerns about the persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in Ukraine.

"We are concerned that the issue of the alleged ecclesiastical and canonical ties of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with the Moscow Patriarchate, which is currently under consideration in court, restricts freedom of religion and religious practice," the UN experts quoted TASS as saying.

The UN stated that these rights are "an integral part of freedom of thought, conscience and religion, enshrined in international standards."

The agency also noted that the world organization expressed alarm over the decision of the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, to deprive the primate of the UOC, Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine, of Ukrainian citizenship in July 2025.

The head of the Ukrainian State Service for Ethnopolitics, Viktor Yelensky, on Tuesday, September 2, announced the filing of a lawsuit to terminate the activities of the Kiev metropolis of the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). According to him, the lawsuit was filed with the Supreme Administrative Court in accordance with the law.

On October 1, the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) announced that Russia would raise the issue of increasing pressure on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council.
