Scientists at Sechenov University have developed transformer drugs
Drugs that change their shape inside the body began to be developed at the A.P. Nelyubin Institute of Pharmacy at Sechenov University. These "smart" drugs can transform from a liquid into a gel or a solid framework, depending on body conditions such as temperature or pH. This allows you to treat diseases more effectively, because the drug is activated only in the right place, for example, in the eyes, teeth or nasal mucosa. This was reported to Izvestia on September 25 at Sechenov University.
One of the significant achievements is the creation of lidocaine eye gel drops, which are used for local anesthesia during operations such as laser vision correction. This drug turns into a gel, providing a long-lasting effect on the surface of the eye, which significantly improves the effectiveness of anesthesia. It is noted that there are no such funds on the market.
"Considering that laser vision correction is performed worldwide by about 5 million people a year, clinicians are constantly looking for ways to make operations more efficient and more comfortable for patients. Gel drops are very easy to use, and at the same time they provide reliable anesthesia, cooling and eye protection," said Elena Bakhrushina, Doctor of Pharmacy, Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology at the A.P. Nelyubin Institute of Pharmacy at Sechenov University.
Another significant invention is a remedy for patients with atopic dermatitis. It is applied as an oil, but when washed off, it turns into an emulsion, creating a protective film on the skin, which restores the lost protective functions of the skin in this disease.
In addition, scientists have developed innovative polymer matrices to prepare for dental implantation. These matrices solidify in the alveolar well and release medicinal substances, which speeds up the recovery process and reduces the risk of complications.
Sechenov researchers are also working on drugs for the intranasal delivery of vaccines and other drugs through the nasal mucosa, which significantly increases the effectiveness of treatment. The experience of the Institute of Pharmacy researchers is already being adopted by foreign colleagues.
"This year, scientists from China, Serbia, Belarus and Kazakhstan visited the Institute's laboratories and got acquainted with the achievements and prospects of using smart systems during several internships and a summer school held at the Institute. And now we are planning joint developments," Bakhrushina emphasized.
On April 28, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced that the share of domestic vital medicines should grow to 90%. According to him, in order to provide high-quality medical care, it is necessary to have effective medicines manufactured in Russia. He believes that the main task is to make modern methods of prevention and treatment more accessible to the population.
