- The political scientist called the protests in the United States a sign of a crisis of confidence in international institutions.
The protests outside the UN headquarters in New York are a symptom of a global crisis of confidence in international institutions and indicate the growing interest of the world community in the Palestinian issue. This was stated on September 23 by political analyst Dmitry Brije to Izvestia.
According to him, these actions are not an isolated phenomenon, but indicate deeper changes in international politics related to the conflict in the Gaza Strip and the struggle for a new world order.
"We see the result of these protests in many countries of the world, especially in the European Union (EU), which, of course, influenced the policy of the leadership of the countries that began to recognize the state of Palestine," the source said.
He also stressed that the protests contribute to strengthening the diplomatic initiatives of the countries of the global South, including Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In addition, the political scientist added that the protests could become a catalyst for changes in the structure of the UN itself. In the coming years, the General Assembly will begin to actively raise the issue of Palestine's full membership in the United Nations, which will significantly strengthen its position on the world stage. However, according to Brije, such actions also undermine the authority of the organization itself, showing its inability to effectively solve key international problems.
"The US authorities will recognize the right of citizens to express positions, especially if protests take place without violence. But, of course, there may be another option. This is a harsh reaction to radicalism. Any attempts to block streets, attack buildings, or provoke disorder will be suppressed by the police. In the political context within the United States, protests can become an instrument of pressure on the administration of US President Donald Trump," the expert emphasized.
The expert also drew attention to the fact that in the coming months we can expect an increase in protest activity in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Student movements, trade unions, and human rights organizations will be especially active. The protests will be international in nature and will gradually influence political discourse, especially in Europe.
On the same day, Izvestia correspondent Elena Prokhorovskaya said that a flurry of protests had taken place in New York near the UN headquarters. The protesters, carrying Palestinian flags and posters, called for international recognition of Palestine.
President Emmanuel Macron announced on September 22 that Paris recognized the statehood of Palestine. He also stated that the recognition of Palestinian statehood "does not detract" from the rights of the Israeli people. In addition, Macron added that France is ready to participate in an international mission to stabilize the situation in Gaza.
Earlier, on September 21, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom recognized the statehood of Palestine. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stressed that the joint efforts of the three countries are aimed at creating a new impetus for a two-state solution, which will include a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages captured by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
