The expert spoke about the creation of a digital model of an ancient city in Iraq
Russian archaeologists have managed to create a unique digital model of an ancient city in Iraq, obtaining a detailed picture of the object without the need for physical intervention. Dmitry Kesya, Director of the Department of Geodetic Control and Digital Measurements at SEVERIN DEVELOPMENT, told about this on September 16 at the Izvestia press center at a press conference dedicated to the BIM modeling project.
According to him, with the help of modern digitalization technologies, researchers were able to obtain an accurate geometry of the city, which would have been impossible using classical archaeological methods.
"If we had acted traditionally, we would have had to carry out excavations, which in fact is the destruction of the monument. In our case, we completely dispensed with remote methods and received all the necessary information without physical intervention," Kesya emphasized.
He added that the digital model allows planning expeditions as efficiently as possible. This year, according to him, a targeted expedition will be held, during which archaeologists will carry out point-by-point excavations, having already all the information about the geometry of the object. This significantly increases efficiency and minimizes damage to the monument.
In addition, according to Kesi, the expedition members are being trained on digitalization of data on site in order to receive and process information during excavations in real time. This is precisely where the technology breakthrough lies: in a combination of remote exploration and point intervention, which makes it possible to study ancient cities with maximum accuracy and preservation of objects.
Earlier it was reported that a pot found at the Vvedenskoye excavation site in 2023 was restored in the Pskov region. The vessel was cracked due to the pressure of the earth's mass. The pot has been collected, and now visitors to the exhibition of archaeological finds at the Archaeological Center of the Pskov region will be able to inspect it.
