Rospotrebnadzor has developed and implemented a fundamentally new algorithm for product inspections, which allows spot detection of violations. Anna Popova, Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor), spoke about the new food quality control system in the Izvestia studio at the Eastern Economic Forum 2025 (WEF 2025) on September 4.

As part of the new approach, large-scale monitoring is carried out monthly: from 900 to 1 thousand samples of the same type of products are taken simultaneously in all regions of the Russian Federation. The research is conducted using uniform methods for the widest possible range of safety and quality indicators. Thus, 135 parameters are checked for fruit and vegetable products, 137 for baby food, as well as nutritional values — the content of proteins, fats and other nutrients.

"And culinary products turned out to be the leader in terms of unsatisfactory indicators. Can you imagine? More than every second sample contained more bacteria than needed. Pay attention to this because it has very short shelf life, different cooking points, and a complex product," Popova shared.

According to her, the best results were shown by Russian-made fruit and vegetable products, where the level of violations does not exceed 2%.

The head of the department noted that the data obtained allows Rospotrebnadzor to work precisely with the most problematic groups of goods. As a result of the monitoring, about 600 prescriptions have already been issued and a significant number of low-quality products have been withdrawn from sale.

"I am sure that the quality of the products on the shelf will be better this year. But we will be working on additional control methods for culinary products, because this is a special story. We are developing, we are growing, we want to ensure that consumers are protected as much as possible in our country," Popova concluded.

Earlier, on May 4, Mariana Jutova, a dietitian at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia that severe dietary restrictions can lead to serious disorders in the body, rather than the desired slimness.
