- The Federation Council criticized Stubb for his words about Finland's victory over the USSR in 1944
Statements by Finnish President Alexander Stubb that the country defeated the USSR in 1944 may indicate a lack of knowledge of history or deliberate deception. Vladimir Jabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestia on September 2.
"Either Mr. Stubb was a two-year-old and did not study history when he was a schoolboy, or he deliberately misleads his fellow citizens and Europeans and Ukrainians in general. Let me remind you that Finland surrendered in 1944. We just didn't occupy it. And she immediately declared war on Hitler, her recent ally," he said.
The MP stressed that the Finnish side should not forget about its historical mistakes. According to him, after the defeat, Finland requested peace, which was granted to it. In this regard, Jabarov urged not to create fictional stories.
Speaking about what can unite Ukraine and Finland in the context of their struggle for independence and sovereignty, he pointed to a common Russophobia.
"The entire Ukrainian government is a Russophobic government. But the current Finnish government has also turned out to be extremely Russophobic. Nothing unites them anymore. And then they will have the same fate. Both of them, I think, will apologize to our country more than once," the deputy concluded.
Stubb told The Economist newspaper on the same day that Finland won the war with the USSR in 1944 because it was able to maintain its independence. According to him, Ukraine is now in a better position than his country, as it has allies and support from outside.
Earlier, on August 19, Russian Presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky commented on Stubb's words about Finland's experience of interacting with the Soviet Union during World War II, recalling the shelling of Leningrad by Finnish troops in 1941. He stressed that there is objective evidence to support this fact.
