India rejects Western accusations of oil purchases from Russia

The accusations against India of buying Russian oil have no basis in fact. This was stated on September 1 by the Minister of Oil and Gas of the Republic of Hardeep Singh Puri in an article published by The Hindu newspaper.

"India's commitment to all international standards prevented a catastrophic shock of $200 per barrel. Some critics claim that India has become a "laundromat" for Russian oil. This is completely untrue. <...> India has stabilized markets and kept global prices from skyrocketing," Bloomberg quoted Puri as saying.

The minister added that India had not violated the rules, and the import of Russian oil corresponded to the price restriction mechanism of the G7 countries.

"The truth is that there is no alternative to the world's second largest producer, which supplies almost 10% of the world's oil. Those who point fingers ignore this fact," Puri said.

On September 1, the Axios portal reported, citing sources, that the United States had called on European countries to impose sanctions on India similar to those of the United States, including a complete cessation of oil and gas supplies.

On August 26, Reuters reported that trade duties of 50%, which were previously announced by Trump, have already begun to apply to India. It clarifies that the tariffs affected goods, which included precious stones, jewelry, shoes, sporting goods, as well as furniture and chemicals.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on August 23 that the United States and the European Union (EU) countries, despite their accusations against India, continue to buy oil from it. He advised these states, if they have problems purchasing fossil fuels from India, not to purchase it anymore.
