Angarsk maniac Mikhail Popkov received a new sentence for murder in 2011

The court sentenced the "Angarsk maniac" Mikhail Popkov, accused of murdering a woman in 2011, to 9.5 years in prison. This was announced on August 28 by the Prosecutor's office of the Irkutsk region.

"The court sentenced the defendant to 9.5 years in prison, and together with the previous sentences, he was given a final sentence of life imprisonment to be served in a special regime colony," the message posted on the Telegram channel says.

It is specified that in May 2011, Popkov met a previously unknown 36-year-old woman in a park in Angarsk. He got into a conflict with her, during which he beat the victim and struck her on the head with an axe.

Next, he moved the corpse to an uninhabited brick building in the form of a tower, doused the body with a flammable liquid, set it on fire and left the scene. According to the press service, the "Angarsk maniac" pleaded guilty to the crime and turned himself in.

The "Angarsk maniac" is considered the bloodiest criminal in the modern history of Russia.: He has 86 victims on his account. Popkov committed all his crimes in the Irkutsk region from 1992 to 2010.

In 2015, Popkov was convicted of 22 murders and received his first life sentence. He was sentenced for the second time three years later, when it was possible to prove his involvement in 59 more deaths.

In July 2021, the court sentenced Popkov to nine years and eight months in prison in the case of two more murders committed in 1995. He received his last sentence in November 2023, when he was sentenced to another 10 years in prison.

In January 2024, the press service of the regional prosecutor's office reported that Popkov had been transferred from Irkutsk to Mordovia, noting that he had been given a final sentence of life imprisonment to be served in a special regime colony.

On August 28, 2025, investigators filed another charge against Popkov over the murder of two women in 2008. Then he drove a car to the area where he met two women. In the process of getting acquainted, a conflict occurred between them, during which Popkov strangled one of the girls with a rope, and then killed the other in a similar way.
