The plan to send thousands of European troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement between Kiev and Moscow is being resisted by the European public. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on August 26.

"Many Europeans are opposed to any deployment of troops that puts them at risk," the article says.

According to polls conducted among the population, 56% of Germans oppose participation, and 67% of the French support sending a contingent only if Kiev and Moscow reach a peace agreement, 68% are against it, the article emphasizes.

The Wall Street Journal notes that Britain's participation is also questionable: security forces will be deployed only if the United States promises to provide assistance and military support to troops in the event of a threat of a direct clash with the Russian military.

"European officials say it is difficult to convince the public of the need for any deployment without a clear statement from the United States that European troops will rely on the support of their armed forces," the article clarifies.

On August 22, the head of the German Military Union, Colonel Andre Wustner, called on Europe to send military personnel to Ukraine. According to his estimates, each of the major countries in the "coalition of the willing," such as Britain, France and Germany, will have to deploy at least 10,000 troops in Ukraine in the long term.

Prior to that, on August 20, Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, in an interview with Izvestia, ruled out plans to deploy NATO troops in Ukraine in the near future. According to him, during the negotiations, Moscow will again need to explain to its European partners that such an approach to settlement is unacceptable for it.

On August 19, Bloomberg learned about the readiness of about 10 countries to send troops to Ukraine as part of providing possible security guarantees for Kiev.
