The authorities of Poland and Finland are considering the possibility of restoring marshes on the borders with the Russian Federation to protect against the alleged Russian threat. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 26.

"On the eastern flank of NATO, the restoration of swamps will be a relatively cheap and simple measure that will simultaneously achieve the goals of the European Union (EU) in the field of nature conservation and defense," the publication says.

It is noted that the swampy area is difficult for tanks and other military equipment. To do this, the authorities of European countries plan to water previously drained peat bogs.

According to the newspaper, options for restoring marshes on the borders with the Russian Federation are currently being worked out in Poland and Finland. Special working groups have been set up for this purpose.

On June 29, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced the formation of 27 engineering parks with dragon's teeth, anti-tank hedgehogs and other means of counter-mobility on the border with Belarus and Russia. It was clarified that Lithuania, together with Latvia, Estonia and Poland, undertook the initiation of a project to protect the eastern border of the European Union. It is expected that the project will strengthen the 2.3 thousand km border with Russia and Belarus.
