- Hungarian Foreign Minister criticized the trade agreement between the United States and the EU
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on August 25 criticized the trade deal between the European Union (EU) and the United States.
According to Szijjarto, the EU has pursued a contradictory political and economic strategy in recent years. Currently, the political power of the European Union and the competitiveness of its economy are at their lowest levels since its founding.
According to Szijjarto, the European Union is becoming more isolated. He stressed that in recent years, European politicians have competed with each other in criticizing US President Donald Trump for the sake of high-profile headlines. However, now the American leader openly dominates the leadership of the European Union in matters of trade negotiations.
"Every sensible European has felt a sense of shame watching the American president wipe the floor with the president of the European Commission. The worst thing is that they tried to present it as an economic success: the Americans paid 10% tax, now they will pay zero, we Europeans paid 2-3%, now we will pay 15%," the Hungarian Foreign Minister stressed at a financial forum in Budapest.
Szijjarto also considers the European Union's strategy towards China to be erroneous. He said that the EU leadership does not use the opportunities of cultural and economic cooperation with China and, on the contrary, politicizes relations.
On the eve of August 24, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, noted that the trade deal between the United States and the EU is not without flaws, but it is strong. According to her, the association concluded a trade agreement with the American side for the sake of stability and predictability in order to avoid a trade war that "would be celebrated in Moscow and Beijing." According to the EC chairman, the new deal will clarify relations between Europe and the United States, which will subsequently help avoid new tariffs.
