The city with the longest name on the territory of the Russian Federation has become Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky, which is located in the Far East, in the Sakhalin region. This was announced by Rosreestr on Wednesday, August 20.

"According to the data of the State Catalog of Geographical Names, the longest name is the city of Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky (25 characters)," RIA Novosti quotes the message.

Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky was founded in 1869 and named after Emperor Alexander II. During the time of the Russian Empire, it was a penal colony, where criminals were exiled to work in coal mines and logging. In 2023, the city's population was 8,769 people.

Earlier, on July 29, it was reported that an anthill discovered in Khanty-Mansiysk in the Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park became the largest urban anthill in the country. Its height is about 2 m and its length is more than 4 m. The record was recorded in the Russian Book of Records.
