- Protests were held in Hiroshima on the occasion of the anniversary of the nuclear bombing of the city
In Hiroshima, Japan, hundreds of people attended a protest on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of the city by American troops. Footage of the August 6 event appeared at the disposal of Izvestia.
It is noted that the protesters demanded the complete abandonment of nuclear weapons, as well as the cessation of armed conflicts.
The footage shows people with banners and various attributes standing in the square. Local law enforcement agencies were also present at the rally.
At the same time, an official memorial ceremony was held on the opposite side of the Peace Park.
Earlier in the day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his speech marking the 80th anniversary of the bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, did not mention the United States as the country that dropped the atomic bomb on the cities. At the same time, he said that only peaceful coexistence and the memory of the tragic events in Japan can make politicians look at nuclear weapons differently.
In August 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Japanese Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is the only case of combat use of nuclear weapons in history, which claimed the lives of thousands of people. More than 200 thousand people became victims of the attack, and the list continues to grow.
