The White House administration is exploring the possibility of imposing additional restrictions against allegedly Russian-linked tankers. This was reported on August 5 by the British newspaper Financial Times (FT), citing sources.

"The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of imposing additional sanctions <...> if Russia does not agree to a cease-fire in Ukraine by Friday (August 8. — ed.)," the newspaper writes.

According to the media, Trump will be ready to make a decision upon the return of special envoy Steve Witkoff from Moscow, depending on how his negotiations go.

"It all depends on what Witkoff returns with. <... If Witkoff returns with nothing, absolutely nothing, Trump will be furious," the source said.

According to FT experts, other options for Washington's anti-Russian measures may include stricter compliance with current sanctions, or joining the new European Union (EU) price limit on Russian oil, which will become effective in September.

The Permanent Representative of the United States to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, said earlier on August 5 that new US sanctions against Russia would be an "obvious" step by Washington to try to end the conflict in Ukraine. He noted that Trump plans to "play this card", despite the effectiveness of the Russian Federation in resisting Western restrictions.

Prior to that, on July 29, the US president reduced the deadline for resolving the conflict to 10 days. At that time, Trump expressed his intention to impose import duties in the absence of a deal on Ukraine, while noting uncertainty about whether tariffs on Russia would work.
