The words of US President Donald Trump about the 10-day ultimatum to impose sanctions against Russia and his doubts about the effectiveness of these measures indicate a lack of a well-thought-out strategy on the part of Washington. Political scientist Ivan Mezyuho told Izvestia about this on August 1.

"The American president clearly does not have a clearly defined plan, he periodically loses his temper, comments on the posts of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, thereby showing that he is offended by criticism and any statement that would indicate that Donald Trump is not setting the agenda for the situation in Ukraine," the expert said.

He also stressed that potential sanctions would not have a significant impact on Russia, as trade relations between the countries had already reached a low level. According to him, the new measures will not be painful, as many economic ties between Washington and Moscow have been severed.

"Besides, after all, the administration of President Donald Trump needs to understand that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has a high level of popular legitimacy within his country. No new US sanctions will shake this high rating, which the head of Russia possesses," the political scientist emphasized.

In addition, Mezyuho drew attention to the fact that Trump's inconsistency creates a negative image among the American elite, which perceives him as a weak leader in the context of resolving the Ukrainian crisis. In this regard, the expert suggested that the purpose of the special representative of the head of the White House, Steve Witkoff, during his visit to Moscow will be to find compromises between the United States and Russia.

"If Trump imposes sanctions, then the Russian Federation can act either symmetrically or even asymmetrically — it can also impose some restrictions on the United States of America. But the key thing is that Moscow will not deviate from its intended path: it will continue to fulfill the goals of the special military operation," the expert concluded.

On July 14, Trump announced his intention to impose 100% secondary duties on Russia if the Ukrainian conflict is not resolved in 50 days. Later, on July 28, he announced that he had reduced this period to 10-12 days.

In addition, on July 31, Trump announced that the United States would impose anti-Russian sanctions after a 10-day period. However, he is not sure that they will have any effect.
