- The Palestinian Ambassador spoke about the possible recognition by the Benelux countries
In Palestine, they expect official recognition in the near future from Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, Salah Abdel Shafi, the Palestinian ambassador to Austria and permanent observer to international organizations in Vienna, told Izvestia in an interview.
"We expect that other European Union countries such as Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands will soon follow France's example. All of them can recognize the State of Palestine," the diplomat stressed.
He also noted that the idea of international recognition of Palestine is gaining more and more support in the world, and expressed hope for a more definite position from Britain and Canada.
On July 24, French leader Emmanuel Macron announced plans to recognize Palestine. He noted that this would contribute to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip, as well as providing comprehensive assistance to local residents.
Later, on July 29, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced his readiness to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly.
