Russia has never supported sanctions against Syria. Their removal by the West represents a move in the right direction. This was stated on July 31 by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference following talks with his Syrian counterpart Asaad Hassan al-Shibani.

"We have never supported such decisions by the West, nor have we allowed any sanctions to be promoted in the UN Security Council. Now our American and European colleagues are slowly starting to lift some sanctions in stages. This is a move in the right direction," he said.

Lavrov also noted that Russia stands for the complete lifting of the restrictions imposed on Syria. According to him, the sanctions were harming the population of the state, and not the political figure against whom they were said to have been imposed.

Earlier, on July 1, political analyst Dmitry Brije, in an interview with Izvestia, called the decision of US President Donald Trump to lift sanctions against Syria a geopolitical reversal. According to him, such actions can significantly change the political and economic situation in the region and open up an opportunity for dialogue between Washington and Damascus. As noted by Bridge, the sanctions in force since 2004 not only undermined the country's economy, but also limited access to vital technologies, medicines and investments.

On June 30, Trump signed a decree lifting sanctions against Syria from July 1. It is specified that this decision was made in order to support the state's path to stability and peace. The decree allows the easing of export controls on certain goods and lifts restrictions on the provision of foreign aid to Syria.
