- The expert warned about the possible development of cancer due to exposure to the sun
The safe time spent in direct sunlight is individual and depends on the time of day and the type of human skin. The sun is considered to be the most gentle before 10:00 in the morning and after 16:00 in the evening. Kirill Masliev, Candidate of Medical Sciences, member of the State Council Commission on Active Long-term Life, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Rudn University, founder of the Heroes Charitable Foundation, told Izvestia about the risks of prolonged exposure to the sun on July 29.
He explained that for people with skin type I (Celtic), even 5-7 minutes in the sun can be dangerous. Most Russians with phototypes III and IV can stay in the sun for 20-30 minutes without harm to their health. At the same time, exposure to the open sun in peak heat is dangerous for everyone and can lead to both sunburn and the development of various types of skin cancer.
"There are three most common types of skin cancer associated with sun exposure. Basal cell carcinoma usually appears on exposed areas of the body such as the face, neck, or arms. This neoplasm grows slowly and rarely metastasizes, but requires surgical removal. Squamous cell carcinoma is more aggressive and more likely to metastasize," the specialist explained.
Masliev called melanoma the most dangerous type, which develops from moles under the influence of ultraviolet rays. He recommended that you immediately consult a doctor if you find moles with uneven edges or sharply changed color.
As a preventive measure, the expert advised using sunscreens with an SPF of at least 50 for skin types I and II, and at least 30 for the rest. The protective cream must be renewed every two hours. Masliev also recommended avoiding the open sun during dangerous hours if possible.
Earlier, on July 17, endocrinologist and nutritionist Oksana Mikhaleva said that drinking sugary soda in hot weather can lead to increased dehydration of the body. She noted the high concentration of sugar in soda and explained that the orthophosphoric acid in the composition masks the excessive sweet taste.
