The International Council of Football Associations (IFAB) intends to change the rules of football, expanding the powers of the video assistant (VAR) before the World Cup, which will be held in 2026. This was reported by The Times on July 16.

It clarifies that referees may be allowed to use VAR to assign corners or when deciding on a second yellow card for a player. Currently, the referee is allowed to use a video assistant only to make a decision on a direct red card, a penalty kick, or when determining a goal.

According to the publication, this issue is already under discussion and changes can be approved only after the annual IFAB meeting, which is scheduled for March 2026 and will take effect immediately before the next World Cup. The board members of the international association intend to make sure that the expansion of VAR will not lead to increased delays during the game.

In addition, IFAB plans to change the rules for penalty shootouts. So, when the goalkeeper deflects a shot, the game can be stopped so that the attacking team cannot finish the ball into the goal.

On March 1, the IFAB press service announced that starting next season in football, the rule on the allowable time during which a goalkeeper can hold the ball will change — it will increase to eight seconds. It is specified that if the goalkeeper violates this rule, a corner kick will be assigned at his gate.
