Military personnel of the 91st engineer and sapper regiment of the Center group of forces restored the memorial complex in the village of Alekseevo-Orlovka, Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). After that, the grand opening of the already restored monument "Mass Grave of Soviet soldiers and monument to fellow countrymen" took place. This was announced on Friday, May 2, by the Russian Defense Ministry.

"The monument was significantly renovated — St. George's ribbons were applied to the obelisks, and the plaque was made of modern composite materials for durability. The military completely put the territory in order: they cleaned the walls, restored the paths, restored the figures of the soldiers and painted all the elements of the memorial," the military department said.

The opening ceremony of the renovated memorial was attended by Alexander Shatov, head of the Shakhtersky Municipal District of the DPR, Major General Andrei Gandzyuk, head of the engineering troops of the Central Military District, Viktor Kuhalsky, commander of the 91st Engineer and Sapper Regiment, as well as residents of the village.

The participants of the event honored the memory of the fallen heroes with a minute of silence and laid flowers at the memorial complex. The servicemen who took part in the restoration work were presented with letters of thanks in honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Patriotic songs performed by local artists complemented the solemn atmosphere.

The renovated memorial "Mass Grave of Soviet Soldiers and monument to fellow countrymen" not only preserves the memory of the feat of Soviet soldiers, but also symbolizes the connection of generations. The restoration work carried out underlines the importance of preserving the historical heritage and respecting those who gave their lives for the freedom of the Fatherland, the Russian Defense Ministry added.

"It is very important that such events take place in the country. Especially in Shakhtersk, the mining land is full of heroes, full of many monuments. I think the restoration of the monument and the opening are very important, because the soldiers who defended our land from the German plague performed a huge feat and this feat will never be forgotten," said Irina, a resident of Alekseevo—Orlovka.

Earlier, on April 30, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Russian military personnel of the North group of forces carried out repairs to the damaged monument in honor of the events of the Great Patriotic War in the Kursk region. In turn, the locals thanked the fighters for their help and the restoration of the monument.
