A state of emergency has been declared in Spain amid a massive power outage. This was reported on April 28 by the Reuters news agency with reference to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country.

"The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has declared a state of emergency in the country following a power outage across the country," the material says.

According to the newspaper, the emergency status will be applied in the regions that request it. At the same time, Madrid, Andalusia and Extremadura have asked the government to take over the functions of maintaining public order.

It is noted that the incident affected the operation of public transport, power lines and telephone communication in some parts of Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon.

Earlier in the day, residents of most of Spain and Portugal faced massive power outages. It was clarified that the reason for the shutdown has not yet been established, while a cyberattack is not excluded from the list of versions.
