The European Union (EU) may join the dialogue on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine on the issue of sanctions. Alexander Konkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, expressed this opinion on Wednesday, March 19.

He noted that when the dialogue format was restarted between Russia and the United States, initially it was of a bilateral nature.

"However, when questions were raised about the role of the European Union, the Americans said that the European Union could join the issue of sanctions in the context of resolving the Ukrainian crisis. This is the only reason for the European Union to be involved in this dialogue, but even that is quite obvious, not at the earliest stages," Konkov said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

The political scientist noted that dialogue with the EU is not a priority for Russia.

"Because the EU has not demonstrated a constructive position. On the contrary, Brussels, London and some other countries seem to be toughening up their rhetoric. And in this regard, they reduce the chances of their inclusion in a constructive peaceful settlement," Konkov concluded.

Earlier in the day, Bloomberg reported that US officials had informed their European counterparts that the European Union would have to participate in any peace agreement on Ukraine, RT reports. The American side considers the EU's participation necessary, since Russia wants to lift the sanctions imposed by it as part of the deal, according to the website. kp.ru .

On March 12, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, announced that the EU supported the proposal for a truce in Ukraine. According to von der Leyen, these steps are a positive development for long-term peace on the Ukrainian side.
