The Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) party is less likely to be able to challenge the results of the early elections to the Bundestag. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on March 11 by historian, political scientist and Germanist Evgenia Pimenova.

According to the representative of the party, the application was submitted earlier that day, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper reports. It is noted that new lawsuits may follow within a week. According to the results of the February 23 elections, the CER received 4,972% of the vote.

"The party lacked about 13 thousand votes. One of the reasons for the appeal to the court is failures in the organization of voting for Germans abroad and in the counting of votes at some polling stations. German lawyers are not inclined to think that this lawsuit will be successful, it will be legally difficult to prove all the facts of violations, especially regarding voting abroad," commented Pimenova.

Among other things, she added, German political culture usually involves maintaining the stability of the political system, rather than undermining it. So, according to the interlocutor of the publication, the chance that the court in Karlsruhe will decide in favor of annulling the elections, especially in a difficult international situation, is "very, very small." She also said that this procedure will take a long time, and the party will be able to receive a decision on it only in 2026.

In addition, the Germanist said, the internal political situation in Germany is tense now. Friedrich Merz, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) bloc in the Bundestag, is striving to form a government as soon as possible.

"At the moment, it seems that the coalition of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the CDU/CSU is taking shape, but at the cost of major mutual concessions, which does not raise the rating of these parties and politicians in the eyes of citizens. One way or another, Merz's potential chancellorship promises to be difficult and unstable," the political scientist concluded.

Early elections to the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, were held in Germany on February 23. As expected, the CDU/CSU opposition bloc won, gaining almost 28.6% of the vote. The second place was taken by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with 20.8%.

The Social Democratic Party of the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz took third place with 16.4%. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) failed to enter the Bundestag.
