July 24 — Florist's Day in Russia: Beautiful greetings
Every year on July 24, Russia celebrates Florist's Day, an unofficial holiday for craftsmen who create bouquets and flower arrangements for all occasions. In 2025, it falls on a Thursday. Read about the history of the profession and the traditions of the celebration in the Izvestia article.
The story of the Florist's Day
The holiday appeared on the calendar after July 24, 2009, by order of the Minister of Health and Social Development of Russia, the qualification requirements for the profession of "florist" were approved. Thus, the work of specialists working with flowers has received not only public, but also state recognition.
In the same year, the national platform, the All—Russian Forum of Florists, began its work, and the date of the holiday was chosen — July 24, the day of the state registration of the profession.
The first specialists in making flower arrangements appeared in ancient Egypt around 2.8 thousand BC. In the tombs of the pharaohs, archaeologists have discovered images of bouquets of lotuses, roses, chrysanthemums, irises, as well as drawings of plants in clay pots. The Egyptians preferred multi-tiered arrangements, and the stems were fixed with cellulose yarn.
Floral motifs were also popular in ancient Greece. Flowers decorated houses, clothes, wreaths were woven from herbs and buds. The most popular at that time were symmetrical triangular compositions of roses, lilies, hyacinths and violets.
The favorite flower of the ancient Romans was the rose. The boys gave them to their chosen ones, and the girls took baths with rose petals to preserve their beauty. Wreaths of roses were worn at feasts. It was believed that such an accessory helps not to get drunk.
The real rise of floristry occurred in France in the XV–XVI centuries. It was then that bouquets appeared in the modern sense of the word. The French placed large inflorescences at the center of the composition, and dried herbs were added to the flowers to maintain the fragrance.
Bouquets of roses have been the most popular in Russia for a long time. White men gave gifts to the brides, and colored gentlemen presented them to the ladies for the holidays. During the time of Peter the Great, floral arrangements became more fanciful under the influence of Western trends. Exotic bird feathers, mirrors, animal figurines and other decorative elements were added to them.
In the 19th century, simplicity and naturalness returned to fashion. The craftsmen tried to imitate nature by placing flowers in a relaxed manner. Figurines of butterflies and insects, as well as branches and small stones were used as decorations.
Soviet floristry has absorbed the experience of floral art from France, Japan and other countries. Exhibitions and competitions for masters and beginners in the profession were held in large cities.
Modern floristry is characterized by a variety of shapes and styles. Both classic bouquets and exotic compositions are available to customers — ikebanas, flowers in vacuum flasks, bouquets of sweets, etc.
Today, a florist is a creator with extensive knowledge, resourcefulness, and a sense of style. To work, he needs knowledge in fields such as botany, soil science, and agrochemistry, and to create impressive compositions requires an understanding of the basics of design and color theory.
The traditions of celebrating Florist's Day
Despite the fact that Florist's Day has no official status, it is celebrated on a grand scale in professional circles. Stable traditions have not yet been formed, each region and flower company independently decides how to celebrate the holiday.
On this day, craftsmen all over Russia hold master classes, exhibitions and competitions. They are attended by both experienced professionals and those who have recently started their journey in the world of flowers. Some salons give discount coupons to visitors or arrange flower distribution to attract customers.
