March 27 — National Guard Troops Day: history and traditions
On March 27, Russia celebrates the Day of the National Guard Troops, a holiday for representatives of the security forces that ensure public safety and order within the country. In 2025, the celebration falls on Thursday. Izvestia covers the history and traditions of the holiday.
Rosgvardiya Day – 2025 — the history of the holiday
The roots of the holiday go back to the beginning of the 19th century. On March 27, 1811, Emperor Alexander I created a new law enforcement unit, the Internal Guard. This structure became the prototype of the Rosgvardiya, but it took more than two centuries for it to come to its modern name and appearance. The unit underwent significant transformations, and its powers also changed.
So, after the revolution of 1917, special detachments of the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counterrevolution and Sabotage (CHEKA) appeared in the country. In Soviet times, the security structure was reorganized several times, changing many names and abbreviations, but its main purpose remained to combat internal threats to national security.
Law enforcement officers had their own holiday only in 1996 under the name of the Day of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In 2016, the Troops of the National Guard of the Russian Federation received their modern name, and in 2017, the holiday was renamed. Today, the Rosgvardiya includes the governing bodies and divisions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for control of arms trafficking, private security activities, special rapid response units (SOBR), mobile special forces units (OMON) and other law enforcement agencies.
Rosgvardiya Day – 2025 — holiday traditions
The celebration is celebrated by current employees of the Russian National Guard Troops of all ranks and divisions, veterans of the profession and cadets. As a rule, celebrations are local in nature and take place within the walls of departments in the form of solemn screenings, concerts, meetings of veterans and feasts. The best fighters are presented with titles and awards.
According to tradition, the Russian guardsmen lay flowers at the memorials of fallen colleagues and hold minutes of silence.
On the day of the holiday, the media introduces viewers and readers to the history of the Rosgvardiya and the merits of this power structure throughout the various stages of the formation of the state.
Earlier, Izvestia told how the Day of the Submariner is celebrated in Russia.
